A Crisis Hidden in Plain Sight
Help Us Build an Orphanage in Gujarat for children living in the system’s blind spots
Every morning, in the lanes of Behrampura, Thaltej, and countless unnamed slum pockets across Ahmedabad, children wake up with no parent to call their own. No one to pack their school bag. No one to ensure they had a meal the night before.
India is home to an estimated 30 million orphaned children — one of the highest numbers in the world. Gujarat, despite being one of India’s most economically developed states, is not exempt from this heartbreaking reality.
And yet, this crisis rarely makes the news. No hashtag trends for these children. No viral campaigns. Just silence — and waiting.
Visit our Contact Us page for support and donation details.
Without a structured, loving institution to step in, these children don’t just lose a childhood — they lose their future.
The Brutal Cycle
Orphanage support in Ahmedabad: what happens to a child without a home?
The life of an orphaned or abandoned child in urban Gujarat is far from the protected, nurtured childhood every child deserves. Without intervention, these children face:
|
01 Child LabourWith no adult earning for the family, orphaned children are pushed into roadside shops, construction sites, and rag-picking long before they should ever hold a tool. |
02 School DropoutEducation becomes a luxury. Survival becomes the priority. Gujarat’s state dropout rate for children from vulnerable backgrounds remains alarmingly high. |
|
03 Trafficking & ExploitationWithout a safe shelter, orphaned children — especially girls — become highly vulnerable to trafficking, exploitation, and abuse. |
04 MalnutritionWithout a consistent caregiver, proper meals are rare. Stunted growth, anaemia, and chronic hunger plague orphaned children across the state. |
|
05 Mental Health CollapseThe trauma of abandonment, grief, and instability leaves deep psychological scars. Most of these children never receive any form of mental health support. |
|
The Root Problem
Why Gujarat needs more orphanages — urgently
Gujarat’s rapid urbanisation has brought economic growth — but has also fractured the joint family system that once served as a safety net for vulnerable children. Nuclear families, migration to cities, and the breakdown of community support networks mean that when a parent dies or abandons a child, there is no village to step in anymore.
The state’s existing infrastructure is woefully underprepared. NGOs and charitable organisations fill critical gaps, but without land and resources, even the most dedicated organisations are limited in how many children they can shelter.
Land is the single biggest bottleneck. One donated plot of land can house, feed, educate, and protect dozens of children for decades.
What We Are Doing
Shaksham Foundation’s Orphanage Initiative
At Shaksham Foundation — a registered NGO based in Ahmedabad (Reg. No. F/21847/Ahmedabad) — we have seen this crisis up close through our Orphanage Support Programme. We currently provide care, nutrition, education, and shelter to orphans and semi-orphans in Ahmedabad. [web:21][web:22]
But the need is greater than what we can currently meet. That is why we have launched an urgent campaign: Help Us Build an Orphanage in Gujarat. [web:21][web:22]
We are seeking a donation of land — any size, anywhere in or around Gujarat — that can become the foundation of a permanent, safe home for children who have nowhere else to go. [web:21][web:22]
A small piece of land from you can become the whole world for a child.
How You Can Help
Donate land for orphanage in Gujarat: the role society must play
The orphan crisis in Gujarat will not be solved by government alone. It requires a collective moral response from all of us.
|
For Corporates Channel your CSR funds toward orphan care. Building or co-funding an orphanage qualifies under Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013. Your brand becomes a symbol of compassion, not just commerce. |
For Landowners If you have unused or surplus land in Gujarat, consider donating or leasing it for this cause. One plot of land can shelter 50+ children for a generation. Your name can be part of something eternal. |
|
For Families Monthly donations, however small, fund meals, medicines, education, and counselling. Even ₹500 a month can change a child’s life. Donations come with 80G tax benefit. |
For Everyone Awareness is the first step. Share this blog. Talk about the orphan crisis. Break the silence. Many donors don’t know the need exists until someone tells them. You can be that someone. |
The Impact
Orphanage support in Ahmedabad: what a safe home actually gives a child
It is easy to think of an orphanage as just four walls and a roof. But ask any child who has grown up in a caring residential institution, and they’ll tell you it was so much more.
| Dignity | A place to belong, an address to call their own |
| Nutrition | Three meals a day, every day, without uncertainty |
| Education | Access to school, tutoring, and a shot at a career |
| Safety | Protection from trafficking, exploitation, and violence |
| Community | Peers, caregivers, and the warmth of family-like bonds |
| Hope | The belief that their story doesn’t end with abandonment |
That is what we are building. That is what your support makes possible.
